Root canal treatment is needed when the nerve of the tooth is infected through decay or injury. You may not feel any pain in the early stages of the infection.
A Severe toothache usually means damage to the nerve. The only way to keep a severely damaged tooth is to remove the nerve. This is done through special files. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped to enable a perfect seal with root canal filling materials and cement.
We use special titanium rotary files and the root canal treatment is mostly performed over two visits.
Unfortunately, a root canal treated tooth does become very brittle and can easily fracture. Crowning or overlaying the tooth with porcelain will strengthen it and prevent fracture
